La Cheim Schools' curriculum is based on, and
aligned with, the Content Standards and Curriculum Frameworks established by the State of California, and at
La Cheim School - Antioch, we have striven to keep abreast of the
developments in education for the benefit of our students. For
example, on an ongoing basis, we have:
- worked to replace outdated
textbooks with ones on the State's textbook adoptions
lists, as those lists are published.
- been at the forefront in our region in aligning students' IEP goals
and objectives to the State curriculum standards.
- made computer technology available for student
use in every classroom.
- integrated character education into the general curriculum.
Every student receives core instruction in English language
arts, mathematics, social studies, the sciences, health and
physical education, and the arts. In addition, a variety of
electives are offered throughout the year, as is hands-on
vocational education.
Each
student is assigned to a classroom of ten or fewer
students, staffed by a special education teacher, paraeducators,
and mental
health specialists. Instruction is
individualized and modified on the basis of each child's
Individualized Education Plan and his own learning style and
ability level. This team works in conjunction with
our on-site clinicians to deliver and support each child's mental
health program based on her treatment plan, as well as serving as
the student's case management team, which tracks progress,
implements and develops IEP and transition goals, and maintains regular contact with parents and
guardians, school district personnel, outside clinicians, and
other supports.
Because our students remain as part of their
school districts of residence, they are entitled to participate
in all state academic testing, including the STAR and CAHSEE
examinations, which are administered and proctored on-site by our
staff.
Although the basic goal of La Cheim is to provide students
with the skills necessary to be able to return to a
less-restrictive environment --such as their home public school,
something which many do achieve-- some of our students graduate and receive
diplomas from La Cheim. This fact, and our commitment to excellence in the service of our
students, led La Cheim to seek and attain accreditation for
our schools from the Western Association of School and Colleges (WASC)
since 1985. At the time, La Cheim was one of the few non-public schools to have attained that
seal of approval.
WASC accreditation
certifies the integrity of our program and curriculum, and means that our credits and transcripts are
accepted by school districts throughout the nation, as well as by
institutions of higher learning and military
recruiters.
