Vocational education has been a hallmark of the
La Cheim program since its inception. At La Cheim
School - Antioch we are proud of having helped so many
young people gain entry into the world of employment.
LCS-A students receive vocational and life skills
curriculum integrated into the general curriculum, from units
in consumer mathematics to résumé-writing, from cooking
classes to mock job interviews. In
addition, if you are at least fourteen years old you are
eligible for paid, hand-on training. At LCS-A
we offer our older students the opportunity to work on campus as
an elective course, and in the process gain experience and
basic skills in fields such as kitchen prep, gardening,
janitorial, or clerical. In addition, basic
employment skills such as familiarity with state and federal
forms and workplace regulations, keeping track of one's hours,
punctuality, and a positive work attitude and communication are
stressed in preparation for possible placement in off-campus
positions.
Through the State's WorkAbility I
program we are able to offer students the opportunity to work
off-campus by partnering with local businesses to open up
positions for our students. By this means we have
been able to offer young people attending our school the chance
to gain rewarding experiences working at retail stores,
restaurants, pet shops, childcare centers, nursing homes, and
other businesses. It has not been uncommon for these
positions to evolve into summer jobs, and in some
instances employers have even offered permanent positions
to students whose work performance and reliability particularly
impressed them.
