La Cheim Behavioral Health Services
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) & Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
La Cheim PHP/IOP Physical Building Closed; New Tele-PHP/IOP NOW OPEN & ACCEPTING ADMISSIONS
La Cheim Behavioral Health Services' physical site is currently CLOSED during the "shelter in place" order. Happily, the possible COVID-19 case on site just confirmed a NEGATIVE test result. However, we are still keeping the building closed until further notice in accordance with the order to 'shelter in place.'
We have launched a tele-PHP/IOP program to provide Zoom-based video groups and communal areas as well as individual therapy and psychiatry -- fully mirroring the services we provide in person. Please feel free to look at the daily virtual program page, but for the fastest response please contact our admissions department using the form below to learn more. Please fax referrals, refill requests, medical records etc. to our new eFax: 510-225-2745
If you are considering our virtual program, please download and get familiar with Zoom on your computer/phone. La Cheim has reassigned a staff member full-time to tech support, but a head start will help you get connected to our community quicker!

CLINIC EXTERIOR NEAR DOWNTOWN OAKLAND
TILED COURTYARD WITH SOOTHING FOUNTAIN
La Cheim Behavioral Health Services is a nonprofit organization that provides a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) to the Bay Area community. Our day treatment offerings are named the "Valfer Life Renewal Program" after our founder, Dr. Ernst Valfer, who first opened the clinic in 1993.
Our unique PHP and IOP offer compassionate, non-institutional, and trauma-informed care for adults coping with serious mental health challenges. We believe in the strength, resilience, and creativity of our clients. With an emphasis on improved coping and problem solving, we help clients begin to stabilize and rebuild their lives with a restored sense of meaning.
The PHP and IOP programs run weekdays from 8:45 am - 3 pm in Oakland, California. Learn more about a day in the life of the programs, meet our staff, and meet our donors. You can also find us on Facebook and Yelp.
Using an array of empirically validated approaches, we work with mood, anxiety, and thought disorders; trauma/PTSD; personality issues; grief, loss, and other adjustment difficulties; substance dependence recovery; and more. Clients often describe our treatment environment as especially welcoming, supportive, and non-pathologizing.
We work with Medicare and most major commercial insurance carriers. The following insurance carriers currently provide coverage for PHP/IOP services at La Cheim: Aetna; Anthem/Blue Cross; Beacon/Value Options; Blue Shield of California; Blue Shield/Magellan; Center for Elder Independence; Cigna; Contra Costa Health Plan; Medicare; Health Net/MHN; and UBH/Optum. We are able to accept Kaiser and Kaiser Advantage clients only by direct referral from Kaiser. Please contact us to verify eligibility and benefits. Unfortunately, MediCal does not provide coverage for La Cheim's PHP/IOP at this time.
The program also offers valuable specialized training for postgraduate clinicians en route to licensure in the mental health field. Interns learn about the latest evidence-based modalities while deepening their expertise and compassion in a supportive, community-minded atmosphere.
